Introduction to Aluminium Gate Automation

Aluminium gate automation provides a secure and convenient way to control access to your property. A modern automatic gate system can be designed for swing or sliding gates, with electric gate openers, remote controls and access control options to suit different driveway layouts. At Stargate UK, we provide gate automation solutions tailored to your property, security requirements and preferred gate design.

Our expertise covers all aspects of aluminium gates and gate automation, including:

Types of Automated Gates: Sliding vs. Swing

Swing Gates

When considering automated gates, most people envision gates that swing open and close on hinges mounted on pillars. However, swing gates require considerable space to clear their full range of travel. For example, a pair of 3-metre gates needs 3 metres of space behind each pillar to swing open.

Considerations for swing gates:

  • Space requirements behind the gate pillars
  • Limitations on sloping driveways
  • Potential issues with parked cars near the gates

Sliding Aluminium Gate

Sliding Gates

Sliding electric gates offer an excellent alternative, especially when space is limited. These gates slide along a track installed across the entrance width, extending beyond the opening. Sliding electric driveway gates are particularly popular where space is limited.

Advantages of sliding gates:

  • Ideal where driveway space is limited or on rising driveways
  • Electric gate systems can be installed alongside existing fences, hedges, or walls
  • Harder to force open than swing gates
  • Available with remote controls, keypads, and control panel options

Gate Automation Motors

Sliding Gate Motors

Sliding Gate Motors

Most sliding electric gates are operated by a motor kit mounted next to one end of the gate. A cog on the motor output shaft meshes with a toothed rack along the gate’s length. Running the motor moves the electric gate along its track across the driveway entrance.

Swing Gate Motors

Swing electric gate motors come in various styles to address the challenge of operating gates from a point very close to the hinges. Automation kits and gate motor models include:

  • Articulated arm gate motors
  • Ram gate motors
  • Underground gate motors
  • Linear screw gate motors

Articulated Arm Gate Motors

These motors use a jointed metal arm to pull the gate open and push it closed. They’re great for wider pillars but require space for arm movement. Articulated arm motors are popular choices for lighter driveway gates.

Underground Gate Motors

Mounted below the driveway surface, these motors are nearly invisible and popular in the UK thanks to their unobtrusive design. They need to impart significant force as their proximity to the gate hinges reduces any leverage benefit. They are often used in high-end automated gate installations.

Ram motors use a hydraulic ram to operate the gate. They’re slim, unobtrusive, and suited for slimmer pillars but require careful alignment. Ram motors are versatile and can be used with various gate materials including steel, iron and electric gates of all types.

Other Types Of Gate Motor

Variations include discrete in-post systems and wheeled systems that are ideal for uneven or sloping driveways. These specialised gate openers ensure smooth automation across a wide range of locations.

Choosing the Right Automatic Gate System

Choosing the right automatic gate system depends on your driveway layout, gate size, available space and access requirements. Swing and sliding gates can use different electric gate opener and motor configurations, so the automation system should be selected to suit the gate’s weight, movement and frequency of use. Professional installation also helps ensure the system operates safely, reliably and efficiently.

Benefits of Aluminium Gate Automation

Automated aluminium gates offer numerous advantages for your property:

  • Enhanced security for your driveway with electric gate systems
  • Convenient access control via remote controls and a control panel
  • Improved property value and kerb appeal with contemporary designs
  • Low maintenance requirements compared to traditional metal gates
  • Durability and weather resistance are ideal for the UK climate
  • Energy-efficient electric gate operation, especially with 24VDC systems
  • Automation kits available for both modern and traditional gate styles

A professionally installed aluminium gate automation system combines security, convenience and reliable access control. Whether you choose swing or sliding gates, the automatic gate system can be configured with suitable motors, safety devices and access controls to meet the needs of your property. Power Options: 24VDC or 230VAC

Electric gate motors are usually either mains voltage (230VAC) or low voltage (24VDC)

  • Low Voltage (24VDC) systems offer built-in obstacle detection and battery backup options, ideal for reliable electric gate operation.
  • Mains Voltage (230VAC) systems incorporate more safety features and are suitable for larger or heavier electric gates.
